DVD – Why bother?

Digital Versatile Disc, which we all better know as DVD, was officially released, according to Wikipedia, in September 1996. There were no doubts about its superior quality to old favourite VHS. Nowadays, most retail stores sale more DVDs than VHSs and DVD rentals topped those of VHS. Many retailers plan to format the VHS format entirely. Why not catch up with technology in your own home library?

Everyone has at least one precious VHS. It could be a family home made film, graduation footage, a video of a beautiful place, which you bought while travelling or a rock concert or favourite TV programme recorded many years ago. You must have noticed that the quality started fading rapidly. It’s not only to move on with the technology. It’s about preserving that video footage, extending its livelihood, ensuring that in 10 years you will see on your tape what you can see today. Of course you cannot expect that by transferring your VHS to DVD you will get any better quality that you have now. You can avoid loosing any more quality though. Also remember that DVDs suppose to last longer, but you must take care of them. Scratching the surface may cost you loosing your precious video.
